4 Tips for Shopping Healthy from Onyx Coale

Healthy shopping starts with organization. Make a list and stick to it, because impulse buying often makes for unhealthy choices.

• Always keep a grocery list on your fridge. Write something down the minute it runs out.

• Check out your recipes and choose your meals for the week before making a final list. Clip coupons for those items: saving money on items you do not use often is not really saving money.

• Plan your meals to fit your schedule. Take in account visitors, work and vacation schedules.

• Make a final list and get only that!

Onyx Coale asks, “Are you a Sugar Addict?”

Diets high in sugar are wreaking havoc on our bodies. Consuming large amounts of sugar on a daily basis raises the risks of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and high cholesterol.

However, once you start an addiction, is it really only your choice anymore?

In some ways, it is not.

Sugar has been found to exhibit the same qualities as other addictive substances.

When you eat sugar, your serotonin levels raise, giving you moments of euphoria.

When you come down from the sugar high, then you want more.

The catch is, the more sugar you eat, the more you want, because your tolerance for sugar rises with continued use.

Emotional Eating: How to Stop by Onyx Coale

Emotional eating is a veil to hide your anger or stress. It serves no purpose other than to distract us with a warm, fuzzy feeling after we have what we want: not out of the emotional situation, but out of the ice cream sundae, that is.

Before letting your emotions drive you to eat, give it a few minutes. Take a breath and let the anger or frustration out with it. Emotionally driven eating will pass after that initial jolt of adrenaline dies down.

If you have used it as a crutch for long enough that even after a few minutes you still yearn to open the fridge, then you need to learn a new method for stress-relief. Take a walk, meditate, call a friend or write it out. And for goodness sake, leave some ice cream for the kids!

Corbett Kroehler is Mr. Sustainability

If it has to do with the environment, Corbett Kroehler has probably written and/or spoken about it.

He is recognized as an international expert on global warming and green issues, and he has earned the nickname Mr. Sustainability.

He doesn’t just “talk the talk”; he “walks the walk”. Corbett Kroehler has been proudly living carbon-neutral since 2005. No small feat for a guy as busy as Corbett, but he insists that the use of carbon credits and offsets make it an achievable goal.

Inspiring people to shake off apathy and become part of the solution to our climate crisis is what drives Corbett Kroehler. Read more at his global warming and green building blog.

Jinsoo Terry: The Future is Multicultural Leadership

Jinsoo Terry  is optimistic about America’s future. Hard to believe given the current atmosphere of doom and gloom thanks to collapsing markets and mortgage foreclosures.

She believes that it is time for America to start tapping into a rich resource, one that could strengthen America’s position as a global power. Jinsoo Terry should know because she has personal experience in this particular area.

What is that resource? Forget oil or gold or lumber; think people.

The United States is not taking advantage of the knowledge and talent possessed by its immigrant population says Jinsoo Terry. This is a huge group of people who have expertise and they have connections in other countries.

Today’s economy is global and it’s multicultural.

The smart business leader will recognize a “foreign-born” employee as a door to a whole new market.

Jinsoo Terry uses her leadership seminars, multicultural training and multicultural expertise to “connect people to people, businesses to businesses, and countries to countries.”

Read the Jinsoo Terry Multicultural Education blog and her Leadership Training blog.

Colette Chandler Green Marketing Webinar Series

The Beijing Olympics served as quite the platform for environmental and social responsibility.

You may remember hearing early on about the “greening” of the 2008 Olympics. This put China in a challenging situation, trying to deliver on a Green Olympics while not having the best environmental and human rights record.

At least China attempted a step in the right direction, though, activists are definitely making sure people know of China's less than stellar record.

This can be quite a challenge for any country, destination, company or brand as it decides to take its first, major environmental step — especially if it does not have a great environmental record.

In order to be successful in this type of situation, you need to be aware of how to accomplish the results you want — align with the right partners, put out the right message and so forth.

Aligning with the wrong partners not only forces the public and your customers to question if your intentions are authentic, it also forces your partners to be in a limelight that will challenge them to be authentic and real as well.

The Olympics offered many corporate sponsors an opportunity to highlight their environmental efforts.

Alcoa provided 350 lightweight aluminum wheels. They shaved nearly 275 pounds off each of the 50 buses used for Olympics transportation. The company is road-testing new buses that are 50 percent lighter than traditional buses – all of which translates into energy and carbon emissions reductions, according to the latest CSR Alert.

Corporate sponsorship does set the stage for many to highlight their sustainable efforts, which can do wonders for their images.

If you want to know how to effectively position your company’s environmental efforts and be effective in communicating to green and LOHAS consumers, click here to learn about Colette Chandler's green marketing webinar series.
